Pillars of Strength - A new program for any dad that has lost their child through still birth or neonatal death or if they are in the NICU
A quick snapshot on me and my org. After losing my son Isaac at two days old in December 2010 and finding no services exclusively available for men, I recently launched a new charity which provides respite and support to men facing significant family trauma. It is a first of its kind in Australia and the pilot is currently operating out of Royal North Shore Hospital NICU and expanding in 2012.
The program covers any dad that has lost their child through still birth or neonatal death or if they are in the NICU. We are partnering with other complementary services such as Sids and Kids, Hearfelt etc as there is no exclusive service available to support fathers going through this traumatic time and we are now also providing our Time Out program to bereaved dads across Sydney.
I have attached a media release which was distributed to selected media for the soft launch which outlines some of our programs and background on the charity.
We have also recently put out a survey through our facebook page www.facebook.com/pillarsstrength which would be great if your organisation could also spread around your network. The link is below:
Do you know of a dad who has had a baby being sick in the hospital NICU), or has passed away (stillbirth, at birth or in the NICU)?
In conjunction with Royal North Shore Hospital NICU, Pillars of Strength has created a survey to get a snapshot on men's health and support when going through family trauma. This survey should only take 5-7 minutes to complete and your feedback is important to help support men in Australia https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3YQFFZ7

New Book "And one on the Mantlepiece"
I have just published a book called 'And one on the Mantelpiece'. It's a self-help book for those who lose a baby. One in four pregnancies are unsuccessful and one in one hundred babies do not leave hospital. To experience the loss of a baby or child is one of the most painful experiences anyone could go through, and newly bereaved parents can wonder how on earth they can make it through. I lost my first baby at full term. I would have found a book like mine so helpful. I discuss my experience in detail in my book.
As Ros Richardson, General Manager of Sids and Kids NSW writes in my Foreword: 'Fiona's journey lights a pathway for those journey of infant loss is just beginning and provides a comforting memoir for those who have gone before'.
My book includes:
* excerpts from my pregnancy and bereavement journals
* my birth experience
* the 'childless parent' stage my husband and I went through
* pregnancy after loss
* facing hurdles such as Mothers day, Christmas and birthdays
* Keeping the baby's memory alive within the family
* How my faith and mental health were affected
* male grief
* other stories of infant loss
My book is available at all Angus and Robertson bookstores or online at www.bookpal.com.au and at www.amazon.com.
Thankyou,
Fiona Mann

Following Miscarriage & Beyond Stillbirth – Two new online programs
Julie & Grant lost their first baby during birth at full term in 2008 and their second miscarried at 11 weeks in 2009. After navigating their way through the loss of their own babies, Grant & Julie felt inspired to create these programs to help ease the way for other parents. The material for these programs was filmed during their third pregnancy.
“We know that this program can’t give you what you most desire (ie. your precious baby), but we hope you will find that it helps to dramatically ease the way through the intense challenges of grieving.”
“The challenge of coming to terms with the death of your baby is multifaceted and complex. We aim to address many parts of this so that you can find more inner strength, peace, love and passion for life in a way that honours your baby, yourself and your family.”
Each program comprises seven interactive modules (Broken Dreams, Intense Emotions, Memories, Unpacking Grief, Persistent Thoughts, Relationships, The Future) & comes with it’s own 32 page workbook. Each module comprises two main video clips averaging 25 minutes each, totaling 6 hours for the complete program. The audios are also included.
These programs integrate various applications of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) through interactive video clips. The programs are self contained and do not require previous knowledge of EFT.
The programs are available at www.FollowingMiscarriage.com and www.beyondstillbirth.com by donation.
Beyond Pregnancy Loss: From Heartbreak to Healing - Book Release
As many of you may know, in October this year Helen Abbott released her eagerly awaited book titled ‘Beyond Pregnancy Loss: From Heartbreak to Healing’ to which many of you provided personal contributions.
I am really pleased to let you know that Helen has offered all friends a special discount code which is outlined at the end of the email.
The book provides people who have experienced the loss of a baby during pregnancy a process to support their journey toward emotional healing and is a ‘MUST HAVE’ guide for anyone who has been touched by this loss (including family and friends who may be struggling to understand the impact of such a loss!). The book is filled with memorable and heart-warming stories that outline the challenges that pregnancy loss can bring and includes:
- A process to revisit your loss that can change the way you feel;
- Strategies you can use to make your emotions work for you;
- A way to understand the decisions you have made as a result of your experience;
- Ways to find comfort and understanding;
- Stories of how others have survived and thrived.
Having been given the privilege of reading the book prior to its release, I was so moved by what Helen had written that I willingly gave the following testimonial which is included on the back cover of the book:
“This book has the ability to transform the lives of many. Helen connects and relates on a level that I have not experienced in nearly a decade of support work in this area. Empowering, thought provoking and compassionate, ‘Beyond Pregnancy Loss’ is an incredibly insightful account of the challenges we can face after the loss of a baby and takes the reader on a journey that builds understanding and promotes healing.”

Survey Participants Required
We are undertaking a survey to better understand how individuals and communities perceive stillbirths to help reduce the
numbers of babies who are stillborn and families who suffer this tragic loss.
As a parent of a stillborn baby, we would value your views through completing a short questionnaire. This is a “rapid response”
questionnaire and will feed into a journal series and also to be disseminated via the ISA website to address the global
challenges of stillbirth.
It will take about 10 minutes to respond.
Click here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2XLN3S7
If you find completing the survey upsetting, please contact us at : http://stillbirthalliance.org/
Please note that once you have opened the questionnaire, you will be able to navigate back and forth, but not to exit and
return from the same computer. This is the second phase of recruitment to this survey, if you were contacted in the first
phase we thank you for your response and apologize for the repeat email.
Your contribution will be very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
J. Frederik Frøen, Norwegian Institute of Public Health (contact person for the survey frederik.froen@fhi.no) and

An Opportunity to Share Stories
My name is Susan Adamson, I am currently endeavouring to put a book together and have it published about the stories behind loss. Particularly loss through stillbirth or early infancy. My book hopes to celebrate the lives of these young souls, and perhaps more importantly give grieving families an outlet and opportunity to share
their stories. I know this book could make a difference. I need to put the message out there that the loss does not equal giving up.
I am fortunate enough to have mothered two beautiful children, but I hear endless stories of mothers who have not had the fortune to see their babies grow. These mothers tell me that they want to talk about their children but everyone seems to avoid the subject. I want to give these mothers a voice. An opportunity to share their joy and pain with others.
If anyone wishes to become involved in this project (they can remain annonymous) please contact me wsadamson@bigpond.com
