Counselling

The program offers a range of professional counselling options facilitated by Karen Jefferson and Danielle Moffat for all bereaved parents across Australia. We can offer you free telephone or email counselling, access to facilitated support meetings, or connect you to one of our counsellors for face to face counselling. To help you in deciding which option would suit you, we have given a brief outline of them below.

Telephone and Email Bereavement Counselling - 1800 824 240

The 1800 Free Call bereavement line is available for families to speak with a bereavement support worker . On the weekend the line is staffed by a wonderful group of professionals and trained parent support workers who volunteer their time on a roster. The 1800 line is available for any parent or family member who would just like to talk with someone. It doesn’t matter how long ago, or how recent your loss has been, this service is available for you to access. If you would like or need ongoing phone counselling we will talk about that when you call and arrange an appointment time for a counsellor to call again.  

For some people, ringing a phone line and talking to a stranger for the first time can be a daunting experience. So if you would prefer, you are able to email us instead at support@pregnancylossaustralia.org.au . Often this is an easier way to share your story and let us know what kind of support you are wanting. On occasion we might use email back and forth until you feel comfortable talking on the phone, or we can link you in to a support meeting or other events for ongoing support, and for some people you might just feel you need a one off. What ever you choose we are always here to offer this support regardless of when your baby has died. 

Face to Face Counselling 

Face to face private counselling is outsourced and available in Adelaide, Launceston and Hobart through private counsellors. This counselling option has a small fee attached which can be discussed with each individual counsellor.

Karen is an experienced and compassionate qualified Counsellor, originally from NZ, Aotearoa. Karen has an interest and compassion around bereavement and grief which blossomed at the age of 12 and has worked in a number of community based services both in NZ and Queensland. Karen has also played a very active role on developing bereavement supports within NZ, and in Canterbury in particular. Along with Karen’s training (based in person centred and strength based modalities), - both in generic counselling and bereavement/grief, she also brings much insight and knowledge from her life experiences and relationship with her own, unique processing of grieving and the skills she has to journey through the painful process which in turn supports her work as she companions others when invited to do so.

Karen has been married for 21 years and is Mum to Liam aged 11, Trinity and Nate who are 8.5 and enjoys exercise, music, dancing and socialising.
